Field Notes

We’re outta here!

Day 1 of the adventure begins right now… and it takes only a short while to run into our first hurdle.

The last couple weeks moved fast and slow. Agonizingly slow to get through every day of work and fast as we zipped through the final items on our to-do. October is also busy for us. The last good month before the season that shall not be named and we had beer festivals, birthdays, and even a marathon to account for.

Finally it was the end of the month, time for one big Halloween hoorah with friends, a deep clean of the house, hurried pack of the car and we were set. This morning (too cold, by the way – time to get out of here!) I met the fine people who would be renting from us to turn over the keys and we were off. Kind of anti climatic in its way, but what was I expecting? Everyone else is at work.

It wasn’t time to head for the ferries yet. We had already decided to skip vacation whiplash and decompress for a few days up-island with my parents. This gave us time as well to troubleshoot any last minute issues that may arise. I wasn’t expecting any, but it took only a few hours for one to emerge.

Goddam two-factor security for our online banking. I’ve safely banked with TD for almost 20 years. Never changed my password. Never had issues. Well, now you must have a phone on hand or you aren’t getting anywhere. You can’t even phone someone to sort it out. I was fuming.

Sarah had to turn her return her work phone for her last day. I had switched to a Mexican SIM card (highly recommended by the way – you can check it out here https://mexicosimcard.com/) and tomorrow we would have to go into the bank and raise some hell. Oh, I also got locked out of my online banking with Tangerine = more time on the phone trying to sort it out.

The good news from Day 1 – we dipped into two small distilleries on the way up to sample their wares. The fine folks at Misguided Spirits let Sarah fill a bottle. It was a good trick to ensure a sale!

Fill ‘er up!
